Thailand burning season: pattern, place and today's air
Smoke can affect Chiang Mai and Pai from February into May, often most strongly late in the dry season. The dates shift each year. Check a nearby station before planning outdoor time.
Travel months, northern haze and today's air
“Burning season” is a traveller’s name for smoke and fine-particle pollution, not a fixed official season. Fire, farming, dry weather, wind and smoke crossing borders can all affect it. March and April often need particular caution, but February and May can matter too.
PM2.5 is fine-particle air pollution. A clear travel photograph or comfortable temperature does not establish clean air. Bangkok readings cannot stand in for Chiang Mai, Pai or another northern stop.
Use a station reading before outdoor plans
- Open Air4Thai or its official app and choose the station nearest your actual destination.
- Read the station name, measurement time and pollutant or index shown; a stale reading is not today’s air.
- Follow the accompanying public-health advice. Reduce or postpone outdoor exertion when the guidance calls for it; choose an indoor alternative or another verified destination.
- If the website is unavailable, try the official app or a current PCD/health-authority notice. Do not assume missing data means clean air.
People with health conditions should follow their clinician’s advice. A mask or a different activity does not guarantee safe exposure. For Chiang Mai and Pai from February into May, retain flexibility and check conditions locally; the calendar cannot predict the severity of a particular season.
Keep a workable alternative
If local health advice calls for reduced exposure, postpone strenuous outdoor visits and use an indoor day. Before moving elsewhere, check the new destination’s current reading too. A different town is not automatically clear.
For seasonal planning, compare February, March and April. People with health conditions should follow their clinician’s advice.
