Thailand in December region overview
Use this month guide to narrow your plans, then check the forecast and local updates before you travel.
Peak-season context: strong weather in many places, high demand, higher prices, and less room for last-minute improvisation.
Check the TMD marine forecast and the chosen carrier’s service notice for your date. The Andaman and lower Gulf do not share one reliable seasonal forecast. Keep a later-sailing or mainland alternative if conditions change.
Royal ceremonies are scheduled around the Grand Palace and Sanam Luang. Check the dated ceremony and visitor guide before fixing Old City plans; traffic and admission arrangements need their own current notice.

December often suits upper Thailand and the Andaman coast. The lower Gulf can remain wet. Popular places can be busy, so compare the room and transfer terms before booking.
Peak prices and hotel scarcity can damage the route. Do not confuse best weather with best value.
Use Hua Hin, Kanchanaburi, Isaan, Trang, Koh Chang/Koh Kood, or other quieter alternatives when the famous route gets too crowded.
Compare the places on your route, not just the month. The north, central cities and the two coasts can feel quite different.
December is often cooler and drier in northern and central Thailand. The lower Gulf can still have northeast-monsoon rain, so a good Bangkok forecast does not settle a Samui beach plan.
Northern Thailand can have cooler nights in December. Compare Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai and mountain stays, but check the local air and forecast before outdoor plans. Popular places can still be busy.
Bangkok and the central plain benefit from lower heat relative to April. The city remains warm by temperate standards, but walking between temples, markets, museums, old districts, and river areas is usually less punishing than during the hot season.
The Andaman coast is a major December strength. Phuket, Krabi, Phang Nga, and Trang are moving into their more reliable dry-season marine window. The lower Gulf needs more nuance. Koh Samui and nearby islands can still receive major rain late in the year because the northeast monsoon affects the Gulf side differently.
December often favours the north, central cities and the Andaman; the lower Gulf needs a separate rain check.
December is usually cooler and drier in upper Thailand. It is a strong Andaman month. Northern travel is seasonally attractive and often busy. The lower Gulf can remain wet later than the west coast.
